Quick answer: Cook frozen chips straight from frozen, with no oil, at 200°C (400°F) for 15–18 minutes, shaking every 5 minutes. Thin French fries need 12–15 minutes and thick-cut or steak chips 18–22. Fill the basket no more than halfway for the crispiest results.
Frozen chips are probably the most common thing cooked in UK air fryers, and for good reason. They are already par-fried and coated in a little oil at the factory, so the air fryer only needs to heat them through and crisp the outside. Done well, they’re crunchier than oven chips in about two-thirds of the time. Done badly, they’re pale and soft. The difference usually comes down to basket load and shaking. Here are times for every cut and the common mistakes to avoid.
Air Fryer Frozen Chip Times by Cut
Times are for a 4–6L basket air fryer at 200°C (400°F), straight from frozen, basket no more than half full, shaken every 5 minutes.
| Type of chip | Temperature | Time |
|---|---|---|
| French fries / skinny fries | 200°C (400°F) | 12–15 mins |
| Crinkle-cut chips | 200°C (400°F) | 14–17 mins |
| Standard straight-cut oven chips | 200°C (400°F) | 15–18 mins |
| Steak-cut / thick-cut chips | 200°C (400°F) | 18–22 mins |
| Chunky “chip shop” chips | 200°C (400°F) | 20–24 mins |
| Frozen sweet potato fries | 190°C (375°F) | 12–15 mins |
| Potato wedges | 200°C (400°F) | 18–22 mins |
| Curly fries | 200°C (400°F) | 12–14 mins |
| Hash browns (triangles) | 200°C (400°F) | 10–14 mins, flip halfway |
| Potato waffles | 200°C (400°F) | 8–10 mins, flip halfway |
Sweet potato fries contain more sugar, so they brown faster; the lower temperature stops them burning before they crisp. For anything not listed, use the Cooking Time Calculator.

How to Cook Frozen Chips in an Air Fryer
- Preheat for 3 minutes at 200°C if your air fryer allows it. Chips landing in a hot basket start crisping straight away.
- Add the chips straight from the freezer. Don’t thaw them, or they go soft and limp.
- Fill the basket no more than halfway. More than that and the chips in the middle steam instead of crisp.
- Shake every 5 minutes to move the chips from the middle to the edges.
- Check 2–3 minutes early the first time you cook a new brand or a fuller basket.
- Season straight away with salt (and vinegar, if you like) while they’re hot.
How Much Can You Cook at Once?
Basket load matters more than anything else. As a rough guide for standard chips:
| Basket size | Max for crispy chips | Serves |
|---|---|---|
| 2–3L | 250–300g | 1–2 |
| 4–5L | 400–500g | 2–3 |
| 6–7L | 600–750g | 3–4 |
| Dual-zone (2 × 4–5L) | 400–500g per drawer | 4–6 |
If you need to cook more, add 3–5 minutes and shake more often, or cook in two batches and return the first batch for 2 minutes to reheat. Not sure what size you have or need? See what size air fryer do I need.
How to Get Crispier Frozen Chips
- Don’t overfill. Half full is the sweet spot.
- Shake often. Every 5 minutes, not just once.
- Finish hotter. If they’re cooked but soft, give them 2–3 minutes at 200–205°C.
- Skip the oil. Frozen chips already contain oil; adding more usually makes them greasy rather than crispy. A very light spray can help on low-fat or “lighter” chips.
- Don’t cover them. Foil or a lid traps steam.
Converting Packet Oven Instructions
Most frozen chip packets give oven times. As a rule of thumb, use the same temperature or 10–20°C lower for an air fryer, and cut the time by roughly a third. A packet that says 220°C for 25 minutes typically works at 200°C for 15–18 minutes. Some brands now print air fryer instructions too, which are a good starting point. The Oven to Air Fryer Converter does the maths for you.
A Note on Acrylamide
The UK Food Standards Agency advises cooking starchy foods like chips to a golden yellow colour rather than dark brown, to reduce acrylamide, a chemical that forms when starchy foods are cooked at high temperatures. Follow the times above and stop when they’re golden and crisp rather than dark.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to add oil to frozen chips?
No. Frozen chips are already par-fried in oil. Extra oil usually makes them greasier, not crispier.
Why are my frozen chips soggy in the middle?
The basket was too full or they weren’t shaken often enough, so the chips in the middle steamed. Cook smaller batches, shake every 5 minutes and add a couple of minutes at the end.
Can I cook different frozen foods together, like chips and nuggets?
Yes. Start the chips first, as they take longer, then add nuggets or fish fingers for the last 8–10 minutes. Keep them in separate areas of the basket, or use a dual-zone air fryer.
Should I thaw frozen chips first?
No. Thawed chips go limp and stick together. Cook them straight from frozen.
Why are my chips burnt on the outside but soft inside?
The temperature was too high for thick chips. Cook chunky chips at 190°C for longer, then finish at 200°C.
