Quick answer: A few small scratches or worn spots on your air fryer basket aren’t harmful. Manufacturers such as Philips say the coating materials are food-safe, and swallowed flakes of PTFE (“Teflon-type”) coating pass through the body without being absorbed. But if the coating is flaking, bubbling or peeling in sheets, stop using that basket and replace it: food will stick, bits will end up in your meal, and the bare metal underneath can corrode.

Peeling coating is one of the most common problems with air fryers that are a year or two old, and it’s almost always caused by how the basket is cleaned and handled. Here’s how to tell whether yours is still safe, what causes it, what to do next and how to stop it happening to the replacement.

Is It Safe to Use an Air Fryer With Peeling Coating?

It depends on how bad it is. Most air fryer baskets and crisper plates use a PTFE non-stick coating, and some newer ones use ceramic (sol-gel) coatings. Both are considered inert at normal cooking temperatures. Philips’ own support guidance says spots that appear from scratching or cleaning with harsh tools are not harmful, because the materials used are food-safe.

The bigger concerns with damaged coating are practical rather than toxic:

  • Flakes in your food. Unpleasant, even if not dangerous in small amounts.
  • Sticking and burning. Food sticks to bare patches, burns, and creates smoke and residue.
  • Corrosion. Once the base metal (usually aluminium) is exposed, it can pit and discolour, especially with acidic food or the dishwasher.
  • Faster wear. Once peeling starts, the edges lift and it spreads quickly.

PTFE only starts to break down and give off fumes above about 260ยฐC (500ยฐF), and most air fryers top out at 200โ€“240ยฐC. For the full picture on coatings, PFAS and safer materials, see are air fryers toxic?

Scratched, Worn or Peeling? Check Your Basket

What you seeWhat it meansKeep using?
Fine surface scratches, coating still smoothNormal wearYes, switch to gentler cleaning
Dull or discoloured patches, no flakingBaked-on oil residue, not damageYes, deep clean it
Small chip with bare metal showingCoating damaged in one spotUse with caution and plan a replacement
Flaking edges, bubbles or blistersCoating has lost its bond to the metalNo, replace the basket or crisper plate

Tip: rub the area with a soft, damp cloth. If dark residue comes off, it’s burnt-on grease, not coating. Our monthly air fryer deep-clean routine removes it without scrubbing.

What Causes Air Fryer Coating to Peel?

  1. Abrasive cleaning. Metal scourers, the green side of a sponge, steel wool and hard brushes are the number one cause. Philips specifically advises against harsh cleaning tools.
  2. Metal utensils. Forks, metal tongs and knives used to turn or cut food in the basket.
  3. Knocking the basket in at an angle. Sliding the basket into the drawer so its edge scrapes the coating chips it over time.
  4. Aerosol cooking sprays. Many contain propellants and lecithin that bake onto non-stick surfaces as a gummy layer, which is then scrubbed off along with the coating. Several manufacturers advise against them; use an oil mister or brush instead.
  5. Dishwasher cycles. Even “dishwasher-safe” baskets wear faster with strong detergent and high heat. Hand washing extends their life.
  6. Thermal shock. Plunging a very hot basket into cold water stresses the coating. Let it cool first.
  7. Age. Every non-stick coating wears out eventually. Two to five years of regular use is typical.

What to Do If Your Air Fryer Coating Is Peeling

  1. Stop using the damaged basket or plate if it’s flaking. Throw away any food with visible flakes in it.
  2. Check your warranty. Most air fryers come with a 1โ€“2 year warranty (sometimes longer if you register). Coating that peels early under normal use may be covered; damage from metal tools usually isn’t. Contact the manufacturer with photos and your model number.
  3. Buy a replacement basket or crisper plate. Ninja, Philips, Cosori, Tower and Instant all sell spare parts for popular models, often for much less than a new air fryer. Search the brand’s spare-parts shop using the model number on the rating label.
  4. Don’t try to “repair” the coating. Non-stick repair sprays and paints aren’t designed for the heat and food contact of an air fryer basket.
  5. Check for recalls before replacing the whole machine, especially if it’s older. See our list of air fryer recalls in Canada.

Replacing the whole air fryer? Consider a model with a stainless steel or ceramic-coated basket, or one with a glass bowl. Our buying guides for the UK and Canada explain what to look for.

How to Stop Your Air Fryer Coating Peeling

  • Use silicone or wooden tongs and spatulas, never metal.
  • Soak, don’t scrub. Fill the cooled drawer with warm water and a drop of washing-up liquid for 10โ€“15 minutes, then wipe with a soft sponge.
  • Use a liner for messy food. Perforated parchment or a silicone liner keeps marinades and cheese off the coating. Read what’s safe to line an air fryer with and our foil safety rules.
  • Oil the food, not the basket, using a pump mister or brush rather than aerosol spray.
  • Let it cool before washing to avoid thermal shock.
  • Slide the basket in straight, without scraping it against the drawer.
  • Don’t cut food in the basket. Move it to a board first.
  • Don’t run it empty at maximum for long periods. A short preheat is fine; see do you need to preheat an air fryer.

Smoke or a burning smell from a worn basket is usually grease on bare patches. Our guide on why your air fryer is smoking explains what’s normal and what isn’t.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to use an air fryer if the coating is peeling?

Small scratches are not harmful, and manufacturers say the coating materials are food-safe. But if the coating is flaking, bubbling or peeling in pieces, stop using that basket and replace it, because flakes get into food and the exposed metal can corrode.

What happens if you eat air fryer coating?

Small flakes of PTFE non-stick coating are inert and pass through the digestive system without being absorbed. It isn’t something to do regularly, so discard food with visible flakes and replace a peeling basket.

Why is my air fryer basket peeling?

The most common causes are abrasive scrubbers, metal utensils, aerosol cooking sprays, frequent dishwasher cycles, washing the basket while it’s very hot, and normal wear after a few years of use.

Can I replace just the air fryer basket?

Usually, yes. Most major brands sell replacement baskets, drawers and crisper plates for popular models. Use the model number on the rating label to find the right part.

Is peeling air fryer coating covered by warranty?

It can be, if the coating fails early under normal use. Damage caused by metal tools or abrasive cleaning usually isn’t covered. Contact the manufacturer with photos, proof of purchase and your model number.

Which air fryers don’t have non-stick coating?

Some models use stainless steel baskets, glass bowls or ceramic-coated baskets instead of PTFE. They can need a little more oil to stop food sticking, but there’s no coating to peel.
