Quick answer: No, air fryers aren’t toxic when used normally. Most baskets use a PTFE (“Teflon-type”) non-stick coating, which food-safety regulators describe as inert at normal cooking temperatures. PTFE only starts giving off fumes above about 260ยฐC (500ยฐF), and most air fryers top out at 200โ€“240ยฐC (400โ€“465ยฐF). The real risks are overheating an empty basket and using a scratched or peeling coating. If you’d rather avoid non-stick altogether, glass, stainless-steel and ceramic-coated air fryers are now widely sold.

The worry is understandable. “Forever chemicals” (PFAS) are in the news, and older non-stick pans were made with PFOA, a PFAS chemical linked to health problems. Here’s what’s actually in an air fryer basket, what the science and regulators say, and the simple habits that keep any air fryer safe, whether you’re in the UK, Canada or the US.

What Are Air Fryer Baskets Made Of?

Basket materialContains PFAS?Non-stick?Things to know
PTFE non-stick coating (most air fryers)Yes. PTFE is a fluoropolymer, a type of PFASExcellentStable at normal air-frying temperatures; replace if scratched or peeling
Ceramic non-stick coatingUsually no (check the brand)Good when new, wears fasterAvoid metal utensils and the dishwasher to make it last
Stainless steelNoNo; food can stickVery durable; use a little oil or a liner
Borosilicate glassNoNoYou can watch food cook; heavier, and can break if dropped

Not sure what your basket is? Check the manual or product page for “PTFE”, “PFOA-free”, “ceramic” or “stainless steel”. “PFOA-free” on its own usually means a PTFE coating made without PFOA, not a PFAS-free basket.

PFAS, PFOA and PTFE: What’s the Difference?

  • PFAS (“forever chemicals”) is a family of thousands of fluorinated chemicals that break down extremely slowly. Some are linked to health effects and are being restricted worldwide.
  • PFOA is one PFAS that was once used to make PTFE coatings. It is linked to immune, hormone and fertility effects and certain cancers. It has been phased out of cookware made by reputable brands, which is why you see “PFOA-free” on packaging.
  • PTFE is the coating itself: a large, stable polymer (a “fluoropolymer”). Singapore’s food agency, for example, says studies show it is non-toxic and inert when used as a coating, while warning that damaged coatings can shed particles into food.

In Canada, the federal government’s final State of PFAS Report (March 2025) concluded that the PFAS class meets the criteria to be listed as toxic under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. It treated fluoropolymers such as PTFE separately, because they may have a different hazard profile. It also flagged food-contact uses for future consultation. That isn’t a ban on non-stick cookware, but expect more PFAS-free products and labelling over the next few years. (Summary of the report.)

In the UK and EU, PFOA is already restricted, and a wider PFAS restriction is under discussion. In the US, several states have passed laws on PFAS in cookware.

At What Temperature Does Non-Stick Become Unsafe?

TemperatureWhat happens to a PTFE coating
Up to 200ยฐC (400ยฐF)Normal air-frying range; coating stable
200โ€“240ยฐC (400โ€“465ยฐF)Top settings on many air fryers; still below the fume point
Above about 260ยฐC (500ยฐF)Coating can start to release fumes
Above about 350ยฐC (660ยฐF)Coating breaks down and releases harmful gases

A thermostat-controlled air fryer working normally shouldn’t reach those levels. The exceptions are a fault or a recalled unit that overheats (see our guide to air fryer recalls in Canada), or a coating that’s already damaged. The fumes from overheated PTFE can make people feel briefly flu-like (“polymer fume fever”) and are especially dangerous to pet birds, so keep birds well away from the kitchen when using any non-stick appliance.

What About the “Black Plastic” Air Fryer Scare?

In late 2024 a study in the journal Chemosphere raised concern about flame retardants in black plastic kitchen items. The journal later issued a correction: a calculation error had overstated the exposure by about ten times, putting it well under the reference limit. The plastic on an air fryer’s casing and handles doesn’t touch food during cooking anyway. If it worries you, choose models with stainless or glass baskets and keep plastic utensils out of the hot basket.

7 Habits That Make Any Air Fryer Safer

  1. Don’t run it empty at the highest setting. A short 2โ€“3 minute preheat is fine; long empty runs at maximum heat are what stress a coating.
  2. Use the temperature the food needs. Most food cooks perfectly at 180โ€“200ยฐC. Our cooking time calculator gives the right setting for any food.
  3. Use silicone, wooden or nylon tongs, never metal, which scratch the coating.
  4. Hand-wash the basket with warm soapy water and a soft sponge. Dishwashers and scouring pads wear coatings out faster.
  5. Don’t use aerosol cooking sprays on the basket. The propellants can build up and damage the coating; use a pump spray or brush instead. See our oil usage calculator for how much you actually need.
  6. Keep paper out during preheating. See can you put paper towel in an air fryer? and foil in an air fryer for safe liners.
  7. Ventilate. Leave space around the exhaust vent and open a window or run the extractor. That also helps with grease smoke (why is my air fryer smoking?).

When to Replace a Non-Stick Air Fryer Basket

  • The coating is peeling, flaking or bubbling.
  • There are deep scratches showing bare metal underneath.
  • Food now sticks badly even with a little oil.
  • Flakes of coating appear on your food.

Most brands, including Ninja, Cosori, Philips and Instant, sell replacement baskets and crisper plates, which cost far less than a new air fryer. Our cleaning scheduler and monthly deep-clean routine help a coating last longer.

Glass, Stainless or Ceramic: Which Non-Toxic Air Fryer Is Best?

  • Glass (for example the Ninja Crispi’s borosilicate containers): no coating at all, and you can watch food brown. Good for smaller households; slightly less crisp than a large basket.
  • Stainless steel: the most durable and completely coating-free, but food sticks more, so use a little oil or perforated parchment.
  • Ceramic-coated: non-stick without PTFE, but it tends to lose its slickness sooner.

Size and cooking style matter more than basket material for most people. See how to choose an air fryer (UK) or in Canada, and our explainer on how air fryers work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are air fryers toxic?

No, not when used normally. The PTFE non-stick coating used in most air fryer baskets is stable at normal cooking temperatures. Problems arise only if the coating is overheated well above 260ยฐC or is badly scratched or peeling.

Do air fryers contain PFAS?

Most do, in the sense that PTFE non-stick coatings are fluoropolymers, which fall under the broad PFAS definition. Glass, stainless-steel and many ceramic-coated air fryers don’t. “PFOA-free” means the coating was made without PFOA, not that it contains no PFAS.

Is it safe to use an air fryer with a scratched basket?

Light surface marks are common and generally not a concern. If the coating is peeling, flaking or showing bare metal, replace the basket, as damaged coatings can shed particles into food.

Are glass air fryers safer?

Glass air fryers avoid non-stick coatings entirely, so they’re a good choice if you want to avoid PFAS. A normally used PTFE air fryer isn’t considered dangerous either; it’s a personal preference.

Is it safe to preheat an empty air fryer?

A short preheat of 2โ€“3 minutes is fine and recommended by most manufacturers. Avoid running an empty air fryer at maximum temperature for long periods.

Are air fryers healthier than deep frying?

Generally, yes. They use far less oil, and studies suggest less acrylamide forms in air-fried chips than deep-fried ones. See air fryer vs deep fryer.
